The Way Cheerleaders Dress and Act...
Thursday January 11, 2007
I recently received an email about the article I wrote called Scandalous Squad. At first I thought the email was a bad joke, but when I responded to it, I found that this person (man) was serious. He truly believes that cheerleaders are interested in sex and that their uniforms and actions are provocative.
Here's his email, "There is no way the "Fab Five" could ruin cheerleading. The only reason females put on the type of clothes that they do is sex. ONLY sluts would dress the way that cheerleaders do and act."

i think that this man is only intersested in SEX. the girls that are on junior squads would not only be interested in sex. i know im not and im 14 years old. this man is very sexist. these cheeerleading uniforms are supposed to show that we are leaders adn role models thanks Jennie
I think this man has his own issues with seeing cheerleaders as merely sex objects, not as athletes or real people. This could be partly because of how we are portrayed in media, but I think at this point if he’s a grown man he has his own problems that he needs to work out.
As for how I would respond, I wouldn’t. I would delete the email and try to forget about it. Most people who have decided for themselves that cheerleading isn’t a sport, isn’t hard, or isn’t about anything other than looking “cute” or “sexy” in a skirt will not have their minds changed by a simple email.
ok thats some crazy stuff people commented on that web blog….all i gotta say is that if i every had to wear a mini skirt in cheerleading i would want to look good! haha
I coach cheer and im sorry this man is a moron, first off why is he so intrested in what underage girls are doing i recommend therapy sencond this girls i coach are 9 10 and 11 sorry no sluts there.it must be something from his high school day maybe he was turned down by cheerleader please get a life and stay out of things you dont understand
okay heres the deal i am very offended by that email and our uniforms are made like that for a reason do you know how hard it would be to cheer stunt and jump in a big bulky sweat shirt and loose pants come on now get real!!! and that guy that sent that email out apparently didnt have such a good high school life with cheerleaders sorry
he was probly a nerd in high school that never gave him any attention ao now he has to bash on all of us so he needs to get over his self
that guy must have gotten turned down by cheer leaders during high school because its hard to do all the stunts cheer leaders do like back and front flips you try it there wearing uniforns like that because they dont wanna be ripping sweat they need to stay cool
that man has problems. 14 and 15 year olds are not interested in sex. cheerleading is a sport and those outfits arent meant to show body parts they show confidence and what we can do. cheerleaders are not sluts and nobody should believe those ridiculous stereotypes
I would describe this man “ignorant” with the correct usage of this word meaning “not knowing” as to cheerleading. If this is how he spends his time buy thinking this way, I only hope he doesn’t work in a school. However this instance does portray cheerleaders in a bad way. Let’s hear some stories of cheerleading teams that turn school administrators around to the sport!
This man obviously doesn’t know that much about what cheerleading is. If he did, he would know that we wear those uniforms so it is easy to jump in, do stunts, and tumbling. Tennis players wear outfits similar to ours..but it seems like the media only draws attention to the outfits cheerleaders wear. There are girls who take advantage of their outfits just because they think they “look good” or something, but it is very wrong and immature to sterotype an entire athletic team like that.
well let just start up with this Man, he might had some problems with his yr in high school like with some cheerleader they might just put him down or something.. but who hit is buzzer say girl in cheerleaderin unifrom look slut but sorry that the only way they can flex and do stunts like to see him do a split with his blue jeans or a handstand LOL. but yeah this guy is dumb and he need help and understand that cheerleader r not just trashy they r there to dance cuz that what they like to do ok sex is not even in there ehad take with me i use to be a cheerleader my whole life and no i never thought that.. so man u should grow up and dont think cheerleader r like that
I have to say that this man is crazy. Cheerleaders don’t dress like they do because they want sex. I do have to say though, I think some of the uniforms out there these days leave very little to the imangination. Yes, we have to wear uniforms that let us tumble, jump and stunt, however having our mid-driffs showing doesn’t help us achieve anything.
“ONLY sluts” would wear athletic apparel?? Cheerleading uniforms are similar to those of female tennis players, and certainly are no skimpier than Olympic gymnasts or swimmers. I think that this man is only interested in sex, and I find it creepy that he’s been reading articles and looking at pictures on this cheerleading website with this mindset.
For one thing, I am a coach and was a cheerleader for 8 years on a National level squad. I did some moves back then that had I known how ’sight’ oriented men are—I would have never done. I felt that I was simply moving another muscle in my body—not trying to turn someone on. It is our responsibility to guide our squads as to what to do and not to do. So–yes–we as young ladies and women do have to be ‘careful’ so as to not dress immodest, but God gave a woman her feminity (curves) for her husband to adore. This doesn’t mean that we have to dress frumpy and like a grandma—simply put more thought into what is worn. Our squads skirts are a super length—I can’t stand the skirts that are granny looking—-ours look very respectable AND we wear medium length biking shorts underneath our skirts so that it’s more comfy and so as not accidentally expose something. I coach at a public high school and you have no idea how many compliments the girls have gotten about their uniforms. I do believe that there are many teams/squads that take advantage of the uniform situation (some knowing and some unknowingly) and are way too revealing—especially on younger girls. And yes—some do appear to have the look of a slut—- whether they are or are not is not for us to judge or discuss.
I do feel that many are too quick to judge—-do you not have anything else to do with your life? What about love?
Sir–please—I wouldn’t be talking about the splinter in someone else’s eye when you have a plank in your own.
Be blessed!
It is obvious this man has no idea what cheerleading is about. The same thing use to be said about nurses that they were all sluts and whores until men started becoming nurses. It took a lot of work and press to get people to realize that there is a lot more to nursing than meets the eye. As a former cheerleader and now a coach I work hard to educate people on what kind of hard work it takes to be a good cheerleader. This guy needs to be tied down and forced to watch Cheerleader nation so he can see what kind of work goes into a competition. As far as I’m concerned his comments just show completely clueless this guy is and he isn’t worth my time.
I have an 8 yr old daughter who cheers and now I am a coach. There are a lot worse things out there than becoming a dedicated, hard working cheerleader and role model for other girls to follow. We want to keep our children active in programs, whatever the sport/program may be, and not have them roaming the streets getting into trouble and finding out about sex too soon. If this is this mans persona of cheerleading, then it will take a lot more than an email to change his mind. His comments tell us a lot about who he is and what kind of mindset he has. Not someone I’d want to know. I just encourage all cheerleaders and coaches/parents to continue to hold our girls to high standards and encouarge them to be the great leaders that they are. They should be proud to be a cheerleader, dancer, tennis player, etc. Yes, there are bad apples in every group, (Fab 5), but that doesn’t in any way speak for all cheerleaders. The cheerleaders I know are wonderful girls! And I’m glad my daughter chose cheerleading as her sport!
I am a Coach for 6th, 7th and 8th grade girls at a middle school and my daughter is a Varsity Cheerleader. I think that this man has some issues he is not willing to come to grips with. First of all, Cheerleaders are athletes! My daughter has been a cheerleader for 7 years. She in no way is a slut and is just doing this for sex. She wears less clothes on the swim team then she does in her cheer uniform. She wears just as much at cheerleading as she does when she is on the softball field pitching.
I would not respond to this man. First of all, why is he looking on this cheer web site anyway. If he was a coach, he would know why they wear the uniforms that they wear!! He needs some serious help.
Well the email was short and crude. I’m not so sure if this person was not posting just to cause a buzz.
I coach my daughters cheer team and if I ever thought for one min. any of the moves or the clothing looked even remotley sexual I would re-think the sport. I would love to see this person or any one else who shares this attitude to wear jeans and t-shirt and work the way these kids work. These young people are very, very dedicated hard working athlets.
I will admit that I would never order uniforms with the mid-rif tops, I see more kids during compititions pulling and tugging on these things. I really do not like to see them on small children.
first of all why is this man looking at a cheerleading website? i think its creepy because if he was a cheerleader or a coach he would understand the reasons for our uniforms being the way they are. it would be too hard to dance tumble and stunt in big baggy clothing. compared to swimmers gymnasts and other athletes we actually wear a lot of clothing (not that there is anything wrong with their outfits) each sport has to have certain uniforms so that their athletes can achieve their very best when competing and performing. although some cheerleading teams uniforms are a little too skimpy the majority of cheerleading teams have respectable uniforms. i think this man needs to get a life and stay away from cheerleading websites.
remember as cheerleaders we have to work extra hard to prove our greatness and ability because of stereotypes and although thats not fair it will be a great day when the world realises what talented hard working athletes we all are
As a coach of 2 teams 12 & Under and 8 & under I have been a part of many boys and girls cheer experience. Statistics continue to support the fact that when kids are involved in extra after school programs they are less likely to get involved with drugs or even having sex. My daughter has cheered since she was 5 years old and formed friendships that will last her forever. What she wears – midriff, shell, skirt or shorts and t-shirt have nothing to do with her having sex or not having sex. These girls are too busy to think about sex. Maintaining their grades and athletic skills are at the top of their list. School Administrators are cracking down on all sports and coaches to have their athletes maintain a certain grade point averages. TV shows like Cheerleader Nation and 2 A Days are opening up the doors for many people to see what athletes go thru but they are reality shows and often only show the “Shocking” parts of athletes lives.
This man as obviously not been to a Volleyball match recently, they wear the spanky’s without the skirt. I agree it is “creepy” that he would be surfing a cheer web site and feel the need to make a comment. He needs to get a life.
omg, he’s insane! how old is this guy? 12?
the reason for skimpy uniforms is for the same reason as gymnast’s even skimpier leotards – to show the form of our tumbling, motions and stunts. if we wore big, baggy clothing you wouldn’t be able to tell if your knees were straight, arms straight, etc. the judges couldn’t judge properly if they couldn’t see those things.
plus baggy clothing moves on it’s own, so our motions wouldn’t look sharp. you need clothing that is tight to the body so the sleeves move when your arms move (and don’t wiggle around) while you perform.
also, you can’t very well stunt with large, baggy clothing on. our hands would get caught in eachothers clothes during stunts. you often have to switch grips, toss someone’s leg, etc. in stunts. guys usually prefer that when they’re stunting with girls that they just wear a sports bra or half top so their hands don’t slip when they toss them. if they are wearing a shirt, the guy usually pushes it off their waist so they can get a better grip. and imagine how scary it would be to catch someone from a basket toss wearing baggy clothing! they may slip through your hands and hit the ground from 20 feet in the air.
big baggy clothing is also dangerous for tumbling because big shirts can come up over your face while upside down and baggy pants can prevent you from moving easily. i’ve actually seen a guy do an arabian with baggy windpants on and as he stepped out of the arabian he split his pants because they wouldn’t allow him to kick enough haha!
jumps are the same. if i have pants or my long soccer shorts on for jumps, they restrict my legs from going up as high as usual. it’s not like i’m some hooker who wears skimpy things all the time to get attention. as i said, i do have longer shorts for soccer and running, but it’s not wise to wear those things while cheering.
there are TONS of reasons for the way our uniforms are made. this man is just immature and bitter. i bet he asked a cheerleader out when he was in high school and she rejected him. he also needs to realize that cheerleading isn’t what it was anymore (in most schools at least) and we pick squads based on talent instead of beauty
This man has made it very clear that he has limited his exposure of the sport of cheerleading. It seems that he needs to actually attend a competition and see what real cheerleaders do. I will say that there are groups that portray themselves to be sensored material;however, the true cheerleaders in this world know that the determination, strength, teamwork, and dedication are far from the suggested antics that this man can view. To all the “real” cheerleaders out there: Keep up the good work, adn never let this type of nonsense bring you down.
well that guy is really sexist and obvously doesnt realize what purpose of cheerleading. it is so obvious hes just an ignorant prick who doesnt know what hes talking about
It’s just the same old, same old. Stereotypically speaking cheerleaders are sluts, dumb blondes or preppy smart girls. I coach a Varisty High School Squad. These young ladies are far from trappy. The problem with guys comments like his is that they base their ideas on the stereotype and not the cheerleaders themselves. If you talked to these students (not that I want this man to talk to my squad) you would learn their a cross-cut of all student life. Not any more “slut” than society itself. And as for the uniforms, yes the skirts are short, but my girls are covered. We don’t wear crop top shells. Their bodies are more concealed than what the fashion industry is pushing on ALL teenage girls today.
I think that it is stupid! i am a cheerleader and i have nothing to do with sex! some girls just want to pump up the crowd and get everyone involved not just have sex!
and besides, there are plenty of sluts out there that dress like nuns.
I think this man has been turned down a time or two in his school days, if he even went, by cheerleaders. I cheered in high school and most cheerleaders grow up to be “leaders”. You can’t do back handsprings and backtucks and stunts in a nun outfit. In my experience in cheerleading I jammed my neck, hyperextended both elbows and blew out my knee. I did not do all that making out in the back seat of a car. Cheerleading gives you the confidence to strive for whatever your dreams are. I have respect for all sports and in volleyball the girls wear bloomers in their sport. I bet that man is not calling them sluts. I have a four year old daughter and I have encouraged her to cheer. She cheered for 1 year already and loved it. I think it has helped evolve her into becoming a confident young girl. Sorry Sir but I am not raising my daughter to be a slut but a cheerLEADER!
I see some uniforms that are inappropriate. I have two girls that cheer – one senior and one youth. The image should be one that is athletic. Does that mean that shirts should be cut just under the bust line and completely off the shoulder? I saw a team last week that had a uniform that looked like a strapless bra with sleeves. Some may push it too far.
Well, I am a cheerleader and it is not about sex!! We dress like that so that we dont get all sweaty and stinky and end up smelling like old socks-plus we also dress like that because that way we can do more with out feeling really hot whilst doing that!
This man is right on. Maybe they arnt dressing for men. But many men will lust after them
i am 11 and i am not this guy is just perverted and sick ! i am, a cheerleder and we were the uniforms becase we have pride in out self and to show dat we care !! thanx haliee, tara
has this guy email u back yet ? the guy probly did not have enough time for his gurl because he rushed it to cheerleder’s and now he i s hateing on the cheerleder’s because that won’t date him lol!!!!!!!!!!
I was going to agree with him because I am very upset with cheerleading right now. It’s a long story but the short form is I didn’t make varsity. But I can’t bash cheerleading. And although I just quit cheerleading an hour ago, I am still in love with it.
This guy is a pervert and very stereotypical. Cheerleaders aren’t sluts. We aren’t.
Oh Lord. That makes me very angry! I am a cheerleader and darn proud of it!! We do not “dress and act” that way for sex. First of all, my coach is very strict about our uniforms being to shorts and she is also extremely strict about our moves being classy-not TRASHY. And second, even if we did dress and act like that we would A) be kicked off the squad B) kicked off the squad C) KICKED OFF THE SQUAD!! Cheerleaders are role models for everyone! We all value that and we would not do anything that would disappoint anyone. I would like to see that man do half of the things us cheerleaders can do! It infuriates me with all the stereotipical, sexist men AND woman who don’t even know what hard work it takes. I can barely walk i am so sore from practice today and i am proud that ALL of my squad works as hard as they do! Oh, and if our grade drops to a C we get kicked off the squad until we bring it back out! I hope along with you, myself, and all the other proud cheerleaders out there, will help ban together to stop this unrealistic, sexiest, hipocritive, judgemental, nonsense. Oh yeah, see how i can use my big girl words? Cheerleaders are not dumb by the way. (:
“Fly High, Do or Die, Dare to Dream, Cheer Extreme”.

Cheerleading I a sport
What a LOSER. He obvii doesn’t know that a cheerleader is not interested in sex. If that person is, it is certainly not all of them. It’s a horrible way to stereotype all cheerleaders just because of 5 idiotic girls. Those girls were extremely immature, revealing, and stupid, and it’s awful that a person would think all cheerleaders are like that! I am a 13 yr old cheerleader and I am somewhat insulted.
I think its cute and everything when little girls are cheerleaders. But when they get older, they are just sluts! The clothes they wear and they are just so into themselves! Its so stupid. Like honestly!!! Sure they have cool dances and stuff. But get real. Put some damn clothes on!!!
the insults by this guy were uncalled for, however,i cant believe some of the rebuttals offered.1)14 1nd 15 year old girls are not interested in sex..thats absurd,of course they are..2)the uniforms are ONLY for function..why dont male cheerleaders dress so skimpily?..3)we’re only trying to cheer our team on..in some cases ,yes, but many of the bumping and grinding, especially for the college and pro teams, borders on lap dancing..both sides have points.dismissing the other side isnt productive,or introspective..(i am 57,so i know i risk sounding like an old fogey, but i think girls can be athletic and passionate without being provacative)thanks for the soapbox..
I grew up in competitive dance and gymnastics, I was eventually in competition cheerleading. I loved every moment and would not trade it, but I also will not encourage my daughter to do this. People can be harsh, especially if you are a part of something exclusive. More so when your winning alot, or very good at what you do. There are diferent types of personality’s and the ones that are mean or rhude seemingly for no reason are the type who want to bring others down to a level that makes them feel big.
