University of Idaho Cheerleaders Told to Put On More Clothes

Wednesday September 24, 2008
Amid complaints from fans, the UI Cheerleaders have changed their uniforms. According to Bruce Pitman, dean of students, "A number of fans were concerned that the uniforms were inappropriate. To be fair, there were a number of fans who liked them." The cheerleading uniforms in question consisted of halter tops and very short black skirts. The new uniform will also have a halter top, but the skirts will be about six inches longer. Shelly Robson, an adviser to the spirit squad said, "The previous uniforms didn't flatter every member of the team, and some girls said their outfits were uncomfortable. She added, "Girls are just bigger these days, not everybody's a size zero. We're not being a bunch of prudes."

This is not the first time this year that UI has had an issue with uniforms. Earlier this month the football team had to remove the UI logo from the seat of their pants after fans complained. So, what do you think? Should the fans dictate what the cheerleaders' and football players' uniforms look like? Leave a comment below.

Thank goodness! I for one am sick of cheerleading uniforms gettting skimpier and skimpier! I am a cheer coach and do not allow my girls to show there stomachs. I don’t even like to see high school girls with midrif tops. skimpy uniforms is not what cheerleading is all about! It’s the talent we need to be looking at not their bodies!

I don’t think fans should dictate what the players and cheerleaders wear. I think that the girls should be comfortable in what they wear and I think it’s safe to say we are no longer in the 60’s where skirts were past the knees.

I am a cheerleading coach and a business professional. In order to be taken seriously at work I need to wear appropriate, modest but stylish clothing. Likewise, cheerleaders, should they wish to be taken seriously as athletes, need to wear approriate, modest but stylish uniforms. I do not see how bare midriffs and barely covered bottoms contribute to the success of a cheerleading performance.

To me at the Division 1 level the U.I. uniforms were fine. They are in excellent shape *( as they should be at this level) It is time for people to stop telling us what to wear.

Does anyone tell beach Volleyball or Gymnastics? what to wear?

High school I totally understand the no midriff shells, but not college.

Even the 3 year old All Stars wear them.

TJ you are so right!! They (beach volleyball players) are in bathing suits and even the other volleyball players basically only wear what appears to be cheerleading briefs. The double standards need to stop!

I’m glad to see this happen. It’s a good thing to see girls of all sizes enjoying this sport. In my opinion cheerleaders are athletes and not show girls.

i am in full agreement with the uniform decision. as a former cheerleader and a coach for 18 years, i firmly believe it is the talent and athleticism of the girls that should be attracting the crowd’s attention, not the lack of sufficient covering! we have a hard enough time in this sport generating respect, and our cheerleaders ought not to be putting their bodies on parade. everyone knows that to cheer at the D1 level, you have to be in great physical shape. no need to flaunt it excessively. and as for one of the previous comments re: the three yr olds wearing midriff baring shells….that should be totally abolished! shame on the parents who let their little daughters be put on display like that!

Oh come on. Cheerleaders have long been part of what the guys watch, and want to see the girls in their little outfits (note the appropriate spelling of “their”). The only reason these particular outfits are having a problem is because they are black vinyl. If they were white and yellow there wouldn’t be a problem.
