(1) Blue Falcon says:

Is cheerleading a sport? You bet it is. Cheerleading-especially at the high school and college level-is as physically demanding as any sport. In addition to dance, cheerleaders must perfom acrobatic-and dangerous-stunts which can lead to severe injury and possible death. A sport? You bet your bippy!

(2) kaylynn says:

i have been cheering for about 10 years now. i am entering high school and all of my team mates and i were talking about the fact that in delaware cheerleading is not considered a sport and for many years now different girls have beeen trying to make ceerleading a sport in DE but no body wants to listen to stuck up preppy little girls that “dont know what their talking about..” everybody tells us that we need to understand that being a stuck up preppy girl is not a sport. we need some help in showing the people of Delaware that cheerleading is a sport and is just as serious and and dangerious as footballl and any other full contack sport there is out there.

(3) Travis says:

I’m not sure how you two can honestly consider cheerleading to be a sport. Seriously, if you two weren’t cheerleaders to begin with, would you even consider it one? I admit, there is much physical demand in cheerleading, and the risk of injury is somewhat high. However, there is no competition involved whatsoever. The purpose of a cheerleader is to unite the crowd and to cheer on the team it is supporting. It is not like there are two cheerleading teams competing for points. Not a sport.

(4) cheer_4_life16 says:

ok travis.i kinda agree that high school cheerleading may not be a sport but theres a whole other world of competitive/allstar cheerleading.its all about competeing and proving that you have more skill than 10 other teams and can hit that 2 and a half minute routine as perfect as possible.which means according to your definition of a sport it is a sport:)and if you get hurt you cant just have everybody stop the routine you have to suck it up and keep going like nothings wrong unlike football or basketball.if you get hurt you get to go sit on a bench and have someone go in for you.in cheer there is no one to go in for you.your whole team is counting on you.and high school cheerleaders have to deal with people ridiculing them and yelling at them during the games.and if its not a sport, why is high school cheer and allstar cheer on espn?

(5) mckenzee says:

I personaly do not think cheerleading is a sport. I also dont think dance is one either. i think for something to be a sport it has to include a ball and physical acivity. I do give cheerleaders there props though because it definatly looks hard. I could probably never do it. I wouldnt want to though. i play soccer and softball and my favorite sport is hockey. I really do not think cheerleading is a sport though.

(6) Stitch says:

cheerleading is a sport. i have been cheering for 8 years and i totally agree that it is. even if i wasn’t a cheerleader i would still consider it a sport. it is way harder then it looks. i ended up in the er a couple years ago from cheering and my doctor said he gets more injuries from cheer then in any other sport. he also said it is dangerous. it has competitions and it has games. it is a physical contact sport. and i just read an article on this same website that said any sport with physicla contact is a sport. and it has rules as well. cheerleading is a total sport.

(7) powercat_uhs_180 says:

as a matter of fact we do compete. ive been in countless competitions in cheerleading. a sport does not require a ball. if so then hockey, track, gymnastics, and swimming cant be considered sports. mckenzee you say a sport requires a ball but hockey is your favorite sport? news flash theres no ball in hockey. think before you say please.

(8) Alyssa says:

Cheerleading is definitely NOT a sport and neither is Dance. I’ve danced my whole life religiously but I would never call it a sport. There is no fair means to judge either activitey, the judging is solely a panel of people who are falible to their own biased opinions. Winning a dance competition means nothing and more likely than not it means your coach was friends with the judges. I’ve definitely seen how corrupt judging can be in these activities. A mom of a dancer judging – how objective is that? I’ve both had objectiveness of a judge favor and disfavor me and regardless of the situation I don’t think dance and cheer are sports. Physical and amazing – yes. Sports – No. I love to dance but think competing is stupid and shouldn’t be taken so seriously. It’s fun but winning means nothing (and I have won a lot).

August 29, 2009 at 7:04 pm
(9) bob says:

Cheerleading is not a sport. No question thst it is a physical activity. But in a sport there needs to be a clear winner. If two judges say team A was better then team b, whos to say team b lost, at least one judge said they were better. The winner can always be argued. Also, there is no competion. There might be other teams at the meet, but a team cheers without any interferance from the other teams.NO DEFENSE

September 1, 2009 at 11:34 am
(10) KATE says:

CHEERLEADING IS NOT A SPORT! Yes you have to be atheltic and flexible to do it. Nobody ever said it was easy. There is no physical contact with the other team to hurt their score. Judging is just based on opinion! there is no real winner! just wich team is better. The performance is based on what YOU an individual can do not the TEAM together. ITS A HOBBY! sure its hard and you can get hurt but you could get hurt from a trampoline!!! Cheerleading is NOT a sport…thankyou!

September 2, 2009 at 12:12 am
(11) Bre says:

I believe 100% that cheerleading is a sport. I have been cheering for over 5 years and its a sport. a sport requires physical activity, CHECK! Competetivity, CHECK! We condition just as much, if not more than the average softball, soccer, basketball, even FOOTBALL player. We have to be strong to lift a HUMAN not a ball that weighs about 1 pound. people look at cheerleaders as sutuck up girls just jumping and screaming, yes those are two things we do but there is training behind it. If it wasnt a sport, why would ESPN, A SPORTS CHANNEL, air competitions!!! For all you people that dont think cheerleading is a sport i would LOVE to see you come out and do what we do. it takes hard work, strength, and dedication. Most athletes would last a week in our shoes! And if your gonna talk down on something at least learn how to spell, maybe people might actually take you seriously “)

(12) Mary says:

Cheerleading IS a sport! And the only sport I ADORE! Let’s do similarites with cheerleading vs. other sports, shall we?
They both have captains and co captains. Well, some sports do, anyway.
They both work extremely hard and have many practices.
They both wear uniforms
They both have tryouts
They have to be flexible and in shape
They both compete. (yes, they do! Many cheerleaders compete with other cheer teams and people judge which team is the best. It’s true.)
Now, I’m finished. But I just want to say that if some of these similarites are not the same the way I put them, depend on all the others.
It’s almost exactly like gymnastics (which IS a sport), except u do more hand motions and you chant. it’s a sport, live with it.

September 5, 2009 at 9:50 pm
(13) kelsi says:

i think that cheerleading is absolutely a sport.cheerleaders work as hard as soccor players and softball players. everone says that cheerleading is not a sport but i will always think it is a sport.all of my friends say that cheerleading is not a sport but they just say that cause they don’t like it.but i love cheerleading and i always will so if u love cheerleading. don’t get offended if someone says that it not a sport cause it is and if your friends say that it is not sport then say yes it is and i like it.

September 6, 2009 at 10:49 pm
(14) Cheer gal567 says:

CHEERLEADING IS A SPORT!! try doing flips on the ground!!! ppl lift weights we lift people. people throw a ball in the air and catch it, we throw people in the air (30 ft high) and catch them. we have to bring our foot behind our head we have to go to practice for 4 hours. we have to do 5o pushups, crunches ect. come to my cheerleading practice and come back and tell me then is it a sport? it will change ur mind if u think it is not a sport.

September 7, 2009 at 11:46 pm
(15) Shaenq says:

Cheerleading is not a sport and I think it’s naive for it to actually be considered. In a real sport, athletes win by the most points scored. Cheerleaders win the who did the best. How the he’ll would that be a sport? It sure does not make them athletes. I don’t give a damn about how much they sweat and how much energy it takes. So much things take energy, like gardening or cooking. What if we could have a cooking competition? That would be a sport too. Lmao. I wouldn’t be suprised because dumb things are tryig to be considered as a sport now

September 9, 2009 at 11:21 pm
(16) Lisa says:

How do judges score olympic athletes during gymnastic routines? There are so many things to judge – movements – height of jumps – precision – etc. So your saying a panel of judges watching olympic athletes are not really able to judge them because they are not getting a ball thru a hoop or a ball across a certain line? This is for all you cheerleaders who get all worked up over these comments: Forget about it – You know what you are!

September 11, 2009 at 3:58 pm
(17) Logan says:

By definition Sport is “an active diversion requiring physical exertion or competition” and Cheerleading by definition is “a sport that uses organized routines that range from 1 minute to 3 minutes made from elements of tumbling, dance, jumps, cheers”
So not really by opinion but in fact cheerleading is a sport. It’s easy to look at it as a “preppy” thinfg I am by NO means a prep, I’m kinda hood if u wana call it tht haha
but Cheerleading takes so much out of you and to say it’s NOT a sport is offensive. If you haven’t tried it don’t talk about it.

September 12, 2009 at 1:27 pm
(18) Amanda says:

Cheerleading IS a sport.I’m the JV cheer captain for my school and we work just as hard as the football players, honestly. We dont do competition but we still work hard..we worked every monday of the summer 9am-12pm,and now we work mon-wed 3:20-5:30.

September 17, 2009 at 9:11 am
(19) cassandra says:

Everyone needs to realize there is two types of cheerleading. Football and competition. Football cheerleading is not a sport, because the objective of football cheerleading is to get the crowd pumped up and cheer on our boys. Competition cheerleading IS A SPORT. You can not argue differently. In competition cheerleading we compete against other teams and go to great lengths to win. So how is competition cheerleading NOT a sport?

September 17, 2009 at 9:15 am
(20) cassandra says:

And the person that said for something to be a sport it has to includ a ball and physical activity… That is honestly the dumbest thing i have ever heard. In a way our ball is the people we are HOLDING IN THE AIR. We left girls in the air and you have to hit a little dinky puck in hockey. ha.

September 17, 2009 at 9:24 am
(21) cassandra says:

Cheerleading has scores in it. Ponits in fact. We get a point for every skill we do, which leads up to our ending score.

September 21, 2009 at 4:51 pm
(22) Megan says:

CHEERLEADING IS A SPORT. ive been involved in cheer for the last 11 years. Gotten teased sense i was in second grade about being a cheerleader. Have you ever tried to do a 2.5 minute routine, of constant movement.. lifting people, tossing them, jumping your highest, tumbling and flipping acrossed the floor ( trying to be aware of your body, and how it will look, giving it the most height possible) , dancing your heart out, making your motions the tighest and sharpest they have ever been, while trying to have a smile on your face the entire time. its harder then it looks. My team practices just as hard or harder then any football team does. ill admit, school cheerleading isnt a sport. thats why i dont do it. but it pisses me off when what i put all my time into people tell me its not real. Cheerleading is hard, and time consuming. but i wouldnt trade it for anything.

September 25, 2009 at 10:58 pm
(23) nikkia says:

There are very strict guidelines to determine the points earned and those areas can be measure i.e. dance ability can be measure by moves per 8 count and synchronization. All stunts, jumps, and tumble skills are assigned a difficulty and points are awarded accordingly. If you are saying that sports without contact with the other team aren’t in fact sports then gymnastics, track, skiing, diving, weight-lifting, and golf aren’t either.

September 27, 2009 at 6:59 pm
(24) Sylvia says:

I’m sorry cheerleaders, but what you do is a physical activity. While there are competitions held a cheerleader does not compete on a regular basis at sporting events It is only when one enters a type of competition with other cheerleaders. Cheerleaders, your job is to entertain and unite the crowd. You don’t compete on the sidelines. You are talented and what you do takes great physical skill, but so do other activities like dancing. When the Olympics recognizes cheerleading as a sport then so will I.

October 2, 2009 at 11:28 pm
(25) david says:

cheerleaders do more conditioning than football players… HAHAHA yeah right. don’t get me wrong cheerleaders work hard but I’ve been conditioning for 3 months and everyday from 2-5:30

October 3, 2009 at 3:39 pm
(26) Christian says:

Cheerleading is not a sport. Im not saying you dont need to be athletic to do it, but nobody every goes to a cheerleading game. They go to a football game and the cheerleaders are there to support their team. There is no competion involved when they are doing what they are trained to do. And whoever says it invovles more conditioning than football, soccer, or basketball your crazy.

October 3, 2009 at 8:00 pm
(27) John says:

Marching bands practice for hours a day, have to be somewhat athletic to move around for a seven minute routine while playing their instrument, and also go to competions across their state, yet no one considers it a sport. These are the same arguments that all the cheerleaders are making and I’m sure they would all agree that marching band is not a sport.

October 5, 2009 at 4:17 pm
(28) abbie says:

okay, for all you people who say cheerleading is NOT a sport, umm you ARE WRONG.
i have been cheering for 11 years and honestly, if you dont know anything about cheerleading, then you need to keep your mouth closed about us. and dont just say that we are stuck up preps and all we do is yell. cause we work our asses off for what we have. and actually for the people who say we dont condition and all that, you are WRONG there also! i condition for 3 hourse twice a day EVERYDAY! and on the weekends. and it doesnt stop until cheer season is over, unlike other sports you condition before you try out and a little while you are playing the sport to stay in shape. until you do the SPORT dont talk about it. you have no idea how much time, dedication and hard work it takes until you try it.
and for people telling other people to get over and not get mad for what other people say about this SPORT, umm thats not something to just let go… some people take it very offensive and we have opinions just like everyone else so piss us off enough and you are going to hear our opinion:)

October 9, 2009 at 11:37 pm
(29) Sogay says:

Cheerleading isn’t a sport, and in no way do they do more that soccer or football players.
I doubt a cheerleader could play a full game of soccer, running over 5 miles a game.
While me and my friends could pick someone up and throw them in the air.
They are competition teams, not athletes.

October 13, 2009 at 4:55 pm
(30) mineyminey says:

yes it is you need musle to do stunts

October 15, 2009 at 12:31 pm
(31) paylee says:

cheerleading is a sport especially in high school and college. It takes alot of time, sweat, and musle. there is so much more about cheerleaders then pom poms and big bows. You lift weights and i lift athletes. Im really tired of people saying cheerleading isn’t a sport that makes me so mad cause they have NO idea how hard we work.I’ve been a cheerleader for 5 years now and it’s not just glitter and smiles, its technique and tons of practice, there is no way soccer, volleyball, football or etc.. could do half the things we do im tired of my teammates getting talked about and not getting credit for all the hard work and effort. cheerleading is a sport!

October 18, 2009 at 8:45 pm
(32) Kimberly says:

“However, there is no competition involved whatsoever. The purpose of a cheerleader is to unite the crowd and to cheer on the team it is supporting. It is not like there are two cheerleading teams competing for points. Not a sport.”

ARE YOU STUPID? CLEARLY YOU HAVE NEVER HEARD OF SUCH THING AS A CHEERLEADING COMPETITION. and in fact, teams DO compete for points. you have obviously never been a cheerleader and therefore have never even MET the physical demands cheerleading requires. so shut your freakin mouth cause you have NO CLUE what you are talking about. freakin retard. you should get hit in the face. stupid.

October 19, 2009 at 11:40 pm
(33) melissa says:

i do not believe that cheerleading is a sport. i totally agree with travis. at a regular highschool there are no cheerleading games. only volleyball games, football games, basketball games… anyone can get a group of people together and wave pom-poms around together.

October 20, 2009 at 1:02 pm
(34) Monica says:

Uhm. Travis… You said that cheerleading squads dont compete head to head for points. HELLO have you ever heard of an ingame competition.? Its where 2 squads cheer a ballgame usually regionals or district. And big games like these involve the cheerleaders to go head to head to see who is better and to see who can gain the most points.

October 23, 2009 at 7:22 pm
(35) Twizzler! says:

I have been cheering for as long as I remember! And for all you peolpe saying it is not physical…. Have you ever tried it!!!!!We do compete, we do get jujed, we do get points……… UMMMM??? I don’t see anything stoping it from being a sport. We don’t interact with the other teams… But really how are we supposed to??? It TOTALLY is a sport but just not exactly the same as other sports……..
My FAV quote….. In football if you miss the catch al you miss is the ball:) GO CHEERLEADERS YOU ROCK!!!!!!!!!!

October 26, 2009 at 11:29 am
(36) cougar cheerleader says:

ok this is the truth cheerleading is a sprot we tested boys and they say cheerleading is so hard i will never do it agin they did every thing a real cheerleader dose so if your a cheerleader and u say ur self cheerleading is not a spot ur stupit

October 30, 2009 at 6:59 pm
(37) Tommy says:

its not a sport. just because its dangerous, does not make it a sport. crossing the street can be dangerous and there is more competition in that then queerleading. excuse me, cheerleading. i play baseball, basketball and football. those are competetive. cheerleading is, however, a great way to maintain little preppy girls frm putting their pep in a guys pants afterschool. thats why we have it in most schools.

October 31, 2009 at 2:43 am
(38) Sara says:

We don’t need balls to throw around in the air or catch. We are athletes who lift and throw other athletes.. a LOT heavier than some ball. DEFINITELY a sport. If we threw balls in the air it’d be way too boring. ;)

October 31, 2009 at 3:25 pm
(39) katie says:

Anyone out there who says ALLSTAR CHEER is not a sport can come to my gym and do my practice. You’ll get to stretch until your foot can go behind your head, condition until your body is vibrating, then tumble over and over again. Lets see, can you do 3 to a tuck, standi ng back tuck, front tuck, and roundoff bh whip bh whip bh full? Plus al whole lot of other skills?!? After that, when you just want to fall down, you get to throw girls in the air and lift them above your head while they balance on one foot and pull their legs all over the place. Yaeh, you do that and get back to me. Too bad you’ll probably be dead by the time practice is over…

October 31, 2009 at 3:31 pm
(40) katie says:

cheer is so a sport…that is ALLSTAR CHEER!!!People get mixed up with high school and allstar cheer. high school means you cheer on other sport teams. ALLSTAR means girls go to competitions and do a routine packed with movement{just like gymnastics…} while a group of judges score you{also like gymnastics}. That means WE COMPETE!!!! Also, anyone who doesn’t think cheer requires physical ability can come to my gym, do my routine, and then get back to me if your still alive to do it…

November 6, 2009 at 11:25 am
(41) Loretta says:

Cheerleading is soooo…not a sport all it is stuck up preps trying to get people to pay more attention to them they just like to act like there so cool and flip there hair in everyones faces get over girls your not that great anyone can move there arms and btw not all cheerleads are bad but they all act stuck up and who do they think they are soccer and football and basketball are wayy better who would want to be a cheerleader noone cares about you!you just get in the wayy of peoples vision of the game and its not like you work hard either go try a real sport ladies!!

November 8, 2009 at 2:25 pm
(42) CHEER15 says:

Well for one, cheerleading in my school has more trophies than any other team. They take up three whole trophy cases. To be a cheerleader, you have to be flexible, be able to yell, be appealing to the crowd. As for actual physical part, you definitely have to be able to have enough strength to put a girl in the air over your head. While she does crazy things with her legs.

November 9, 2009 at 2:22 pm
(43) Ashley says:

YES cheerleading is definetly a sport. I’m a cheerleader and a softball player. I’ve never played a sport harder then cheerleading. I cheer competitivetly and I cheer sideline for football games. Compettive cheerleading is a contact sport. We lift people, we have muscles. Just because there’s no ball to run around with doesn’t mean cheerleaders aren’t athletes. We wear makeup and have ribbons whatever, we still have to look good while playing a sport. If you get hurt you can’t go sit on the bench you can’t quit. Cheerleading is definetly a sport. Cheerleaders need respect as athletes.

November 13, 2009 at 1:14 am
(44) Kristin says:

Cheerleading is definately a Sport!!! The individuals who say it is not are rediculous. Infact they sound kind of bitter, maybe cheer tryouts didnt go so well for them. :( Cheer requires as much atleticism if not more than other sports, and I know because i’ve played a number of sports my whole life and i feel they cheer is probably the most difficult out of them. yea You run alot in soccer, i play soccer i know it involves running and requires you to be in top physical condition, but so does cheerleading. Infact come to one of our practices, you’ll prolly just get tired from watching, especially when we start getting ready for regionals. Yea regionals are COMPETIONS held by the state where we COMPETE against other cheer teams. Like other sports if you do good you get a trophy. To be a cheerleader you need strength, flexibility, stamina, full body coordination, timing and brains. No cheerleaders arent dumb, they are probably some of the smartest people you’ll meet.

November 13, 2009 at 3:25 pm
(45) cheerleader says:

cheerleading is sport. it takes practice, there is so many skils that you have to aquire! we compete all around the country. there is alot of injuries and broken bones. it is hard work. we dont throw little 5 pound balls. we throw people!!! we compete about 10 times a year. just like any other sport. & we compete to see who is the best. i have gotten hurt so many times from it and soooo many people do. if u dont think cheerleading is a sport then ur an idiot. thats all i have to say:)

November 14, 2009 at 12:24 pm
(46) Nikki. says:

i think cheerleading is a sport, not just because i cheer, but because it takes time, dedication, and skill. just like football, basketball, baseball, or anything else like that. think about it. could you do any of that stuff that cheerleaders do? check out this video on youtube called death defying cheerleading. it proves we are just as much of an athlete as any of you.

November 14, 2009 at 12:37 pm
(47) nikki. says:

cheerleading is a sport. it takes time dedication and skill. you don’t have to have a ball to have a sport. look at swimming, track, gymnastics, hocky, biking, disc golf, skiing, snowboarding, skateboardingg, windsurfing, archery…ect. i play soccer and cheerleading, and i have four seven years now. i think that cheerleading is just has hard, competative, takes just as much dedicating, and skill as soccer. my boyfriend plays football starting Qb, baseball, and basketball, and i know that i could deff. beat him in anykind of physical activity there is.

November 16, 2009 at 3:52 pm
(48) jessie says:

umm yaa cheerleading is a sport ive been chheering for 10 years now im 15 and i can say i have at least 6 black eyes been thrown in there air and no one catch me cheer is a spor. studies show there are more cheerleaders get hurt than football players. i have compared my bruses and scratches to some of my football friends and i always have more. i have had to concusions. so ya cheer is a sport

November 24, 2009 at 11:19 am
(49) Bella says:

Yeah it is a sport. If cheer isn’t, then swimming isn’t! Sports are usually propelling things through the air. Look up the definition. We throw people in the air. No difference than football! They throw balls, we throw people. We have practice like any other sport. We have uniforms, like any other sport. We compete, too. We even have our OWN cheerleaders! So yes, cheer is a sport. Gymnastics is considered a sport. It’s in the olympics. They dance. They flip. They run. Exact same thing as cheer, but they don’t throw people in the air and yell. Cheerleading is a sport. I’m sure of it. To some of you, it might just be a bunch of girls in short clothing running around. But it’s more to us. You have to work hard to achieve what’s needed. I mean, I’ve gotten alot stronger since I’ve started cheering. And I’m 12. I started when I was 8. I’m positive my conclusion shows, cheerleading is indeed a sport

December 4, 2009 at 10:33 am
(50) Danielle says:

I think cheerleading is a sport. We do just as much stuff as all the other sports and it’s not fair to say that we aren’t a sport. I’ve cheered pretty much my whole life, since the age of six till now, which is the age of fourteen. I only skipped one year, which was fifth grade. But I’ve been hurt so many times that I can’t even remember all of them. Cheerleading is on of the most dangerous sports and one of the hardest. So everyone who says it isn’t a sport just because other teams don’t go to competition are retarded. My squad competes. What does that make us?

December 5, 2009 at 2:50 pm
(51) Sara says:

I used to think cheerleading was the dumbest thing ever. Then I went to a friend’s practice and have been cheering ever since.

Cheerleading STARTED as a way to get the crowd pumped and to shake um… pom poms, but has developed into something far beyond that.

Sideline/football cheerleading is nothing. Competition is the new generation of cheer. We do receive points for tumbling, stunting, jumps, energy, etc.

I really don’t appreciate people calling cheerleading ‘dumb’ or ‘preppy’ as I work my butt off 9 hours a week at practice and then on the floor of competitions. Don’t let your view of typical highschool cheerleaders construe your decision of whether it’s a sport or not.

We may not throw around balls, but I throw girls. A basketball weighs 5 oz, footballs = 1 lbs, my flyer weighs 90lbs and I sure do throw her high.

I suggest that all the doubters go look up videos of All Star cheerleading, which is top level. Even recreational (town teams) are really elite now.

December 6, 2009 at 7:46 pm
(52) Alexis says:

Cheerleading is 110% a sport. Anyone on here that says its not please try it yourself and see how difficult it really is. The definition of a sport is “an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature”.
Cheerleading is very competitive, every girl/team wants to win and be the best out of anyone else. To be a great cheerleader you have to have alot of skill and strenghth to be able to throw a girl in the air and catch her so she doesnt get hurt, and entertain a crowd with tumbling and jumping skills. Many girls get hurt in this sport just to entertain you also pump up a crowd or just to win and say they are the best. yes cheerleaders are just known as sluts of a school or just girls who are snoty girl who get whatever they want but in reality its not really and if for you it is thoes girls arent true cheerleaders. i think i did a good job explainig it.

Cheerleading is def a sport. because we do things that not many people can do. cheerleading has a big deal wiht our lives. there has been deaths in cheerleading. its very hard. Being a flyer is the hardest thing ever, even harder then football. I’m a flyer and i can truly say it is a sport..we work out like the football players do, and our bases lift a lot of weight to put their flyers in the air. we show off, because thats what we are cheerleaders, even though we wear our short skirts. we still work hard. CHEERLEADiN & GYMNASTiCS is my entire life, & is the hardest sport i’ve ever doneeee-

Cheerleading a sport?? why would anyone ask such a dumb question! OF COURSE CHEERLEADING IS A SPORT!!
i do cheerleading.. we thow, we cheer, we dance, we tumble, we practice very very hard!
its not all about the pom poms and the uniforms.
people say theres no competition: ever heard of cheerleading COMPETITIONS?? where you get POINTS!
if people say that cheerleading is not a sport, then nor is gymnastics, or dancing then!
people say you need a ball for it to be a sport: Then: dancing, running, gymnastics, swimming, boxing, fencing, diving, high jumping, long jumping etc is not a sport then.
people say its not hard to throw a person in the air: OF COURSE ITS HARD: hello!?!?! your throwing A PERSON, and it has to be good! you have to do it on counting too! and if you drop it its all your fault!!!!!

not at all a sport. There are no stats and no numbers on there uniforms. There are no times to beat. At there competitions the judges base there results on who they think did the best. In a real sport there is a set winner either on the scoreboard or with the best time or what not. In a real sport there is a set way to score-touchdown,goal,basket,pin,run,etc. Where are there games? Do they have a schedule or a team record? O wait there games are at other games. Bottom Line:Cheerleading is not a sport whatsoever, it is a hobby

o and before i forget…who is there best player?? who can perform in the clutch and get that goal, basket, run, etc to win the game?

and for people saying it is a sport because of injuries…its there own fault they get injured…they were dropped most of the time.

What type of defense do they run…zone-man to man-triangle in one?? o wait they have none and they dont play anyone head to head

(61) Stefanie says:

When cheerleading first came about it was absolutely not a sport. It’s sole purpose was to excite the crowd and cheer on the team playing a sport such as football, basketball, or wrestling. Since this time soccer and hockey cheerleaders have even come about. But other forms of cheerleading have too. The most important of these is competition cheerleading. This form of cheerleading is most of the time completely separate from cheerleading used at sporting events. They dedicate their entire year to go to multiple competitions working their way up to National and World titles. They condition when they are not practicing but they are practicing for most of the year. This type of cheerleading is by no means an individual sport, if one cheerleader is out the entire squad feels it. There is no team on team physical contact but some sports simply don’t have that. They score points just like any other sport and it’s not by a biased judge in most cases, they are awarded points in a rubric type format to make it fair for all teams. They do everything every other sport does but in a unique way.
Cheerleading gets a bad reputation from what it originally was but please accept that cheerleading has evolved into a sport for those who do compete at a prestigious level. If you don’t believe me check out a competition. You won’t regret it and I have a feeling it will change your perspective. That just goes to show that people go to events just to watch cheerleaders. Thank you for your time I hope you take into consideration what I have left for you and evolve your thinking to what cheerleading is today just as it has evolved over the years.

cheerleading is a SPORT:
to do it you have to be: flexible, coordinated and strong( in 1 month of cheerleading i became one of the strongest in my class, i used to be the weakest)

Look it up cheerleading on wikipedia it says its a SPORT, infact im gonna copy it for you all who dont think cheerleading is a sport
Cheerleading is a sport[1] that uses organized routines that range from 1 minute to 3 minutes made from elements of tumbling, dance, jumps, cheers, and stunting to direct spectators of events to cheer on sports teams at games and matches and/or compete at cheerleading competitions.

look carefully at the words for those who dont believe its a sport : SPORT, COMPETE AND COMPETITIONS!!!

if its really a sport, why does the article above prove that its not?

i’ve never seen allstar cheer so i dont know what it’s like, but highschool cheer isn’t all they do is wave their pom poms and put words to go with it. some of ther cheers all they do is bounce back and forth…does that reallly sound like a sport? i think not.

think about this: would/will they ever put cheer in the olympics?
they may have some pretty bad things in the olympics tht we may not consider a sport, but other countries do and our contry participates in them as a hobbie so we put them in it.. no other country cheers, right? so why woud they put cheer in the olympics as a sport if no other coutry does it?

most sports, when they have any competition, go one on one, like football teams or soccer teams, cheer on the other hand has like 40 teams at competitions. don’t you think of sports as one on one? even if it seems like the stupidest sport in the world?

going along with the paragraph above, people may think swimmming isn’t a sport, but it is. its you against the clock. you work your butt off to get the best time you can get, even if it is just taking off a second or 2. you wuld see where im coming from if you tried a 2hour workout i go through everyday of the week.

I used to be a cheerleader, but I still dont think its a sport. Sorry to everybody that thinks it is.

cheerleading as a matter of fact is indeed a sport. Cheerleading involes heavy physical activity and a large amount of your strength. To those who think it is not, guess again. Cheerleading is not all about cheering up the croud or having school spirit. Besides fotball season or basketball season we have our own competitons. we compete umongs other schools in the world. We make up a routine that has to be at least 2min long. Now my point on this is for those who dont think it is try lifting up girls in the air(base) and dancing and jumping and running around to get to one location to another. Now how can you not call that a sport? try doing that for at least 2min without braking a sweat! IMPOSSIBLE! It is not just a title we were just because. I were the title “cheerleader” proudly, beacuse i have deserved it. I have been cheering since age 6 and is my 10th year in cheer.

okay , for all you haters saying cheerleading is not a sport , im afraid it is ! When it comes to school cheerleading you cheer for football and basketball games … i will admit that is not considered a sport . but when it comes to competition season there is not doubt that cheerleading IS A SPORT ! we have to do 2.5 minute routine that is just as tiring as anyone playing there games . We have to be precise and on time and perfect for everything , which is basically what you do in any other sport . we lift people which is ten times harder then lifting like a 1 pound ball , probably weighs less then that . we have to condition just like everyone else does , we have long and hard practices if not longer then any other sport . if you cheer for a school team , you practice over the summer for about 5 hours every morning of the week but the weekends and same for when you get back in school , you try having that schedule . oh , by the way for you people saying we couldn’t play a full game of any other sport … YOUR WRONG. im a soccer player and i can sure as heck get out there and play my games . i would really like anyone to come to our practices do what we do , then you can try and tell us that cheerleading is not a sport . its not just throwing someone in the air and catching them its way more then that and if you drop them thats your ass . we get points just like other sports . we are scored on every little thing we do in our routine from facials to difficulty to precision . its hard and you have to perfect it . we do have other people we compete against , its called every other cheerleading team that is there . it might not be head on where your both out there at the same time but that doesn’t matter because if it did gymnastics wouldn’t be counted as a sport ! every team gets points and the one with the highest amount of points wins ! right ? thats how it goes in basketball , football , soccer . and cheerleading ! yeah , we can have 1st , 2nd , 3rd place but that doesn’t matter because everyone knows that the first place is the winner best of the rest just like in other sports . for sara you work your butt off in swimming just to get to seconds better ? well you work your butt of in cheerleading to get the best you can even if its just two points better then the other team so there goes that ! it doesn’t matter if your called a squad or team get over it you still work your butts off together to be the best you can and better then the other team , right ? i think so . for you people saying you go one on one well thats saying one person against another . i guess football and all those sports aren’t sports either because there is more then one person out there and one person cant win the game just like in cheerleading one person can’t win the competition. we work our butts off , condition , you have to be dedicated, strong , a hard worker just like everyone else . oh and were not just some stuck up preps . i know half the people on my squad are most definately not . so , bottom line CHEERLEADING IS A SPORT ! get over it and face the facts .

Let’s see cheerleading is def. a sport! CCS “o and katie 3 girls lifting a girl that ways maybe a 115…real tough thats 38.3 pounds each.” The backs don’t take much of the weight, plus that weight is always moving around, plus you have to pop the girl high enough so she can do a full down, double down ect. Also, one mans where one girl lifts up another by herself. They are hard but part of MY cheerleading routine! Cheerleading takes sooo much.
shitzy, UHM PEOPLE DO WATCH CHEERLEADING ON TV ON ESPN A SPORTS CHANNEL, duhh, wow these people are way stupid. Also, I have practice 16 hours a week sometimes more! We condition, jump, tumble, dance and stunt! I would like to see any of you do that, because I highly doubt that any of you haters could! We aren’t stupid preps waving poms around. In fact all of the girls on my FRESHMAN team are in honors plus about half are going into AP (that is Advanced Placement for all of you who don’t understand what AP means, It also counts for college credits, in tenth grade)

Sorry to let of you people down, but yes cheerleading is a sport and will alwasys be a sport. doing flips and lifting girls in the air can get pretty dangerous if u havent noticed. So guys stop hating because u think there is a chance that a girls sport can actually compete with you. And girls dont hate on cheerleaders just because you cant be one

Oh really travis? Yes, cheerleaders jobs are to get the crowd involved at sporting events. But do you know what else they do? They compete in competitions doing outrageous tumbling passes and flipping into the air. Something your fat ass could never do. Anybody can dribble a ball up and down a court or hold a ball and run down a field. But it takes WAY more talent to do what cheerleaders do. Cheerleading is also a year0round sport, unlike other sports which only consist of about 2 or 3 month periods. Maybe you should get your facts traight before you evern BEGIN to diss a sport that you would NEVER be able to take part in.

(84) Taylorchamp says:

CHEERLEADING IS DEFINATELY A SPORT!!!!!!!!!!! Stfu if u seriously think it’s not a sport. When u compete it’s for points and overall u get a score. You do sooooo much conditioning. My cheer is everyday and conditioning doing 25 push ups everytime u drop someone. 50 crunches after every tuck you pull. 50 push ups everytime you talk and laps. Continuously tumbling. 10-20 toe touches in a row then to the rest of jumps. Keep runniNg routine over and over and over.. Mountain climbers, jumping jacks, lemon squeezers, crunches, push ups, back crunches, jump lunges, jumps, and keeps going on. I compete almost every weekend sometimes twice a weekend. Girls pass out and throw up from all the work they do. You use just about every muscle in the body. You use bodies to throw in the air and if u fly then u have to heel stretch, scorpion, libs, and more and double and full down. There’s guys and girls on teams also. You dance cheer jump stunt tumble all in 2 min and 30 seconds. It’s most definately a sport. If u want more info on cheer and how much more they do.. Just ask

(86) patrinka. says:

ive been cheering for a long time now, and i believe it’s a sport because it is very competitive. But by me saying competition cheer is sport because it’s more aggressive, and it involves judges, can also mean American Idol is a sport. Nevertheless it’s most definitely a form of dance, maybe more aggressive with less passion. Cheerleading is in the same category at weightlifting, would you say weightlifting is a sport? Either way, people will have their agreements and disagreements. It doesn’t have to be like say the Olympics to be technically called a sport. Cheerleading has their own tournament, such as WORLDS, which is HUGE deal to be in. In conclusion, cheerleading IS A SPORT because it involves endurance, TEAMWORK, and trust. Say what you want, everyone has different opinions.

(89) Morgann (: says:

Alright, so this whole thing is about if you consider cheerleading a sport or not. Am I right? Well do I? It depends. I have cheered for 9 almost ten years. I have done it all. I don’t believe that cheerleading is a high school sport. Yess, you get hurt like crazy, you have to be just as strong as any other athlete, and I think it’s harder than any other team activities. High school cheerleading is never about a win or lose. It’s about helping the crowd to get pumped up and involved. However All-star is a whole other story. If we’re talking all-star I think it is a sport. You compete to win. Some say there is no real winner in cheer just that one team is better than the other. Well same with football, softball, soccer.. Etc. All that is proven is that one team is better than the other. That’s it. One person could have messed it up for everyone but still it’s everyones fault. Cheerleaders work together to win and to show everyother team that we are the best just like every other team out there. Just because we arnt tossing around a ball and trying to score points don’t mean it’s not a sport. Instead we toss around people and get points off instead of gained. You do one thing wrong it’s points off. Every sport is about technique. You can’t throw a football, swim a stroke, pitch a ball, or kick a ball properly without technique. And cheerleadig has the most technique. Every move you make has some type of technique. You can’t tell a cheerleader cheer is not a sport until you have tried it. So dot assume cheerleading isn’t a sport till you have done it.

Ok…i don’t get why cheerleaders get so defensive. It’s in the name…CHEER LEADER they LEAD CHEERS…No one cares if It’s dangerous…if its that dangerous don’t throw anyone then…just because you have muscle doesn’t mean you’re in a sport. Cheerleading is a recreational activity where slutty girls stand on sidelines and wish they were athletes and yell go team! There are two types of cheerleaders stupid cheerleading and gymnastic cheerleading…if it’s not in the Olympics it’s not a sport. Football, soccer, basketball, hockey, and baseball are all sports. Not cheerleading. you people have nice soft mats underneath you…And don’t say that you have fall and break your neck easily because that can happen in any sport… especially football, hockey or basketball…You can get tackled wrong, back checked, or even fall from the rim or be under the fighting pile… If you people whine that it’s really dangerous don’t be stupid and keep doing it. i can care less what anyone says YOU ARE NOT AN ATHLETE! You go on for like 5 minutes and don’t get sweaty…YOU’RE WEARING MAKEUP!!!! Are you kidding…What sport are you supposed to look pretty in…Not one person gives a shit… The only people that say it’s a sport are pervy guys and/or stupid friends…CHEERLEADING IS A BUNCH OF STUPID CHICKS THAT THINK THEY’RE POPULAR SHAKING THEIR ASSES ON THE SIDELINE…OHHH exciting as hell…cheerleading is for little pisses…they don’t need refs cause who’s gonna get in a fight…NO ONE…The only way they can get hurt is if it’s their fault…

(93) CheerAC1296 says:

“I doubt a cheerleader could play a full game of soccer, running over 5 miles a game.”

Um, WRONG! First off, most cheerleaders have played soccer, softball, or some other sport before until they got involved in cheerleading.

And second, a soccer game is 1 hour long. Cheerleading practices are at least 2.5 hours long. In soccer, you have SUBS, and halftime, so you aren’t even playing for an entire hour. Cheerleaders practice nonstop for 2.5 hours except maybe 5 minutes of water break. We give it our all during practice, and 2.5 hours of running around the floor, flipping, jumping, dancing, and throwing people is much harder than 1 hour of soccer.

Sport: an active diversion requiring physical exertion and competition
That is exactly what cheer is! Competition for high school teams is to cheer louder and harder than the other team’s cheerleaders. and competitive cheerleaders have competitions 8 or more times a year!

“cheerleading is not a sport bcuz even inside the sport they are called a squad not a team

it isnt a sport because people dont watch it on TV or go to professional cheerleading games and they dont have records and you can get injured walking down the hall just because something can get you hurt doesnt make it a sport”

WRONG! Competitive cheerleaders NEVER call themselves a ‘squad’. We are a team!
And people do watch it on TV. I’m watching cheerleading worlds RIGHT NOW! on ESPN! ESPN=Entertainment Sports Programming Network. Why would it be on the SPORTS network if it wasn’t a sport?
There are records. You could go online if you wanted and look up the winners of every competition you wanted to!

“There are no stats and no numbers on there uniforms. There are no times to beat”
No, there are not times, because that’s not the type of sport it is. You aren’t trying to beat a time. You try to beat the SCORE! And no stats or numbers? Gymnasts don’t have stats or numbers! They are in the olympics! You people base what you say on other sports. How about trying it!
“who is there best player?? who can perform in the clutch and get that goal, basket, run, etc to win the game?”
Everybody is in it TOGETHER to get the points! That’s why it is called a team!
“you people have nice soft mats underneath you…And don’t say that you have fall and break your neck easily because that can happen in any sport”
We don’t have “nice soft mats”. We may when we are first learning a skill, but that doesn’t last long. School cheerleaders tumble and stunt on GRASS or on the basketball court! Competitive cheerleaders are on a spring floor, which isn’t soft!
CHEERLEADING IS DEFINITELY A SPORT! Try it and you will see! You don’t know what it’s like to flip in the air, nothing to help you. You don’t know what it’s like to do something that is your deepest fear. You don’t know what it’s like to do your job, but get elbowed in the face or kneed or smacked! You’ve never broken both your arms, then gone back and done the thing that broke them (YES BOTH!) again! You haven’t been thrown in the air and trusted someone to catch you, and gotten hurt. You haven’t been pushed down in your splits until your legs felt like they were going to fall off. You haven’t experienced cheerleading, so who are you to judge us?! Cheerleading is a sport, so just DEAL WITH IT!

Why are goals the golden standard for determining a winner and a loser? Cheerleaders’ moves are scrutinized by judges who, I assume, are using very strict criteria to rank the teams. It requires strength, flexibility, coordination, agility, and unfailing trust in and reliance on your teammates. What could be more sporty?

I honestly think that most arguments against cheerleading as a sport are tinged with sexism (regardless of the speaker’s gender). Cheerleading is still primarily a woman’s sport, and girls and women aren’t generally valued as athletes. At least not when compared to their male counterparts. Football players are respected. Cheerleaders, despite all the changes their sport has undergone over the years, are seen as shallow fangirls of the real sportsmen.

But cheerleaders no longer exist just for the benefit of male athletes. They are no longer limited to loudly encouraging other people to succeed; instead they are actively participating in their own intense competition.

Cheerleading IS a sport. (And so is competitive marching band. My high school’s marching band kicked ass, and the drum line probably would have beaten up anyone who dared argue that their activity was not a sport.)

(112) mel says:

There are various aurguments debating if Cheerleading is or isn’t a sport…
1. there has to be a competion/game – cheerleading does infact have a full season of competions…esp in All Star cheerleading…. that’s all they do is practice and compete they do not cheer at other sporting games….

2. there has to be a score/winner….. in the competions they compete for points the team with the highest score wins…..same as with all other “sports…. the difference is cheerleaders actually get scored on various things at the same time unlike other “sports”

3. there has to be a ball…..if that is the case then there are several sports that would be disqualified from being considered a sport…..gymnastics, swimmming, diving, skiing, skateboarding, snowboarding, iceskating, (someone made a point that hockey would be in this catagory but they have a puck and in field hockey it is a ball so I would not disqualify Hockey)

4. it can’t be only an american sport to be considered a sport….first cheerleading is a national sport various countries do infact compete against each other…. in this arguement American Football would not be considered a sport since it is only played in the USA….. everywhere else football is soccer…..and there isn’t a debate on whether football is a sport

5. it has to be in the olympics- same point as above american football is not in the olympics

6. it has to be televised – it is check into ESPN they do broadcast the WORLD CHEERLEADING competions

7. it is not a contact sport – yes the difference is the contact is within the same team

8. there are no names/numbers on their uniforms – neither do the sports of tennis or golf

9. there are no refs – yes there are, they are called judges same as gymnastics

10. physically challenging – yes, the traing involved is highly physically challenging

I’m not going to get into the stereo types and name calling because the do not have any impact on qualifing cheerleading as a sport……..

Hopefully from the points posted above you can clearly see cheerleading should be considered a sport…..I would also like to point out that I am not now nor have I ever been a cheerleader, but I enjoy watching the sport just as much as I enjoy watching football, hockey, soccer, baseball, basketball, etc…..

No, I wouldn’t consider cheerleading to be a sport. I know lots of cheerleaders, most of which don’t consider cheerleading a sport. It is a physically demanding and mildly dangerous activity. However, cheerleading doesn’t involve actual competition which you need to have to be a sport. There are some forms of cheerleading that can be considered sports, but most cheerleaders in the US can’t consider themselves athletes for being a cheerleader.

(124) kailee says:

alright, cheerleading is 100% a sport. people on here say its not because “the score and winner is based on opinion”. its not on opinion because everyone starts out with the same score. each thing that goes wrong in the routine has a certain amout of points that has to be deducted. the point of cheerleading is to do crazier stuff than anyone else without hurting yourself and making it look easy. anyone who says its not a sport just doesnt have the balls to try it. we also have to smile and look cute while doing it. if you get hit or something in a routine you have to act like nothings wrong and keep going. in any other “sport” you get hit then lay on the ground like an idiot then sit on a bench while someone takes your spot. you never know whats going to happen so you have to improvise and make it work. im sorry that we go over the limit and throw around people instead of a ball. maybe if you were a real athlete you could do that too.

August 6, 2010 at 7:21 pm
(125) Katie says:

Though Im sure this comment will not be recognized and will simply be placed in the shuffle of the others I must say cheerleading is a sport. Though I am a cheerleader, and therefore am a bit biased, I feel like we do the same things everyone in “real sports” do except with a bright smile, a skirt, and no padding. We jump, we run, we condition, we lift, we tumble, and push ourselves to be great. We do compete and by saying these competions don’t count because they appear rare is like saying gymnastics is not a sport (which I also participate in) either. You may argue that when we are on the football field or basketball court we lose any traces of “competiton” for we are there to cheer on the team and motivate the crowd is silly becasue we never lose that competion. We must appear better than the other teams cheerleaders by being louder, jumping higher, and tumbling harder than the others. No noone in this case is there to say there is a true winner but true cheerleaders can feel it. Of course many of you will disagree however, I wonder what classifies other sports as “sports” and not merely athletic activities? Would you consider golf a sport because it uses a ball? Some will argue yes. Would you say gymnastics or swimming a sport though no ball is used? If it is a question of there can only be one winner, then how do “teams” win? (Even though in cheerleading competions a single team does win unless it is an individual cheer competion.) Just some food for thought.

I can do a flip, clap my hands and scream lets go! How do u think u teach a phys ed dance class your counting and moving at the same time n clapping to the beat. I am enrolled at SUNY Cortland for physical education and we don’t even have a cheerleading squad for our football team…its just a club, where if it was a sport it would have a club and an actual team!

Where is the national association that sanctions teams, sets standards, and establishes a yearly schedule for competitions? Where are the university scholarships for cheerleading? Cheerleading playoffs? People go to the games for the real competition, not to watch the cheerleaders. I think the court decision against Quinnipiac University was correct. Cheerleading is not a sport. It is just a way for colleges (and some high schools) to avoid establishing real team sports for girls and young women, a means of getting around Title IX. Yes it is intensely physical and demanding, but that doesn’t make it a sport. Be a cheerleader if you choose, but don’t fool yourself into thinking that that makes you an athlete.

(130) Lambert Cheung says:

Yes Cheerleading is a sport. The problem is not the athleticism, but the ignorance and inconsistency of the “FEMALE
Like all girls taking a stand in feminism, their beliefs are always inconsistent. First they complain they they are treated
in a sexist manner, and yet, they go to Christian Churches, which forbid any kind of freedom for women if you read it carefully enough.Example -”Reveleations 21:26,” The unholy, the unbeleving, the sexually immoral”will all ban in the lake of Sulfury fire. ” YOu idiot women and girls really need to reevaluate what makes cheerleading move forward.
Second, you complain about outfits being too conservative and then too simpy? Man you women are real stupid.
The reason these rules exist against you is becuase you advocate the underage law. What do you expect when you are not willing to take adult responsibily for your actions, your rights are going to be taken away.
Furthermore,if women do not allow themselves to enjoy sex or say it’s ok, how can you expect anything less then sexism.
Third, you complain men treat you like dirt, and yet you date the abusive guys and call the nice guys boring and weak.
Therefore, are you really expect cheerleading to move forward when you act this stupid and add to the problem. YOu only turn the nice guys who stood up for you against you.
Cheerleading and skimpy outfits are not the problem.
It’s you stupid women and your inconsitency that have ruined everything and given rise to these ongoing problems

Cheerleading a sport! how uncouth, how warped, a sport!!!

October 5, 2010 at 2:27 pm
(132) Sam says:

One of the biggest misconceptions with cheerleading is “It’s physically demanding, so it must be a sport.” There are a lot of things that are physically demanding. Moving furniture, painting a house, changing a tire, ect… just because something is physically demanding doesn’t make it a sport. Cheerleading practice looks and sounds more like excersize than anything. Excersize is quite demanding, but it’s not a sport.

People Say “Cheerleading is hard, therefore it’s a sport.” Here are some other things that are hard; rocket science, chemistry, algebra, winning a debate, sudoku, jigsaw puzzles, understanding women, and beer pong. Something being hard to do doesn’t make it a sport.

I’m sorry, but cheerleading is NOT a sport. Period. Football, baseball, hockey, basketball, tennis, rugby, water polo, ect… are all easily recognized as sports. If cheerleading is so obvious a sport, they why do so many people think it’s not? That right there should tell you something. Now, this doesn’t mean it’s easy. People seem to think that when I say cheerleading isn’t a sport, I’m saying it’s easy to do. Sure it requires a lot out of you, but it’s just not a “sport”. Cheerleaders are there to pump up the crowd for a game of football, or whatever sport happens to be going on. They don’t compete against each other for the most part. Sure, some squads have competitions, but they also have National Speeling Bees. Does that make spelling a sport? No. A lot of people on here are starting their comments with “I’ve been cheerleading for X years, cheerleading is a sport!” Just because you participate in something, doesn’t make it a sport. And I don’t need to do cheerleading to know it isn’t a sport. I’ve never played Rugby in my life, but I know it is a sport. I’ve never tried to build a bridge before, but I know it’s not a sport.

Cheerleading is hard, physically demanding, requires some skill, but it is not a sport.

Hey Carly, how about America just sits on their read ends and lets Hitler and Germany finish mopping the floor with your country? October 5, 2010 at 4:11 pm
(134) Ed says:

According to the Women’s Sports Foundation the following criteria has to be met to be considered a sport:

1)A physical activity which involves propelling a mass through space or overcoming the resistance of a mass.

2)A contest or competition against or with an opponent
Is governed by rules which explicitly define the time, space and purpose of the contest and the conditions under which a winner is declared.

3)The acknowledged primary purpose of the competition is a comparison of the relative skills of the participants.

By these 3 statements cheerleading is not a sport. IF your team tosses other girls in the air then you could make an argument that you meet #1′s requirement, however there is no defined scoring for completing a routine. Scoring is subjective, one judge may like it another not therefore there is no defined condition for one team to win. In light of this statement I guess we can no longer call diving or gymnastics sports either.

Sorry ladies, The womens sports foundation has spoken; Cheerleading is NOT a sport.

If cheerleading and dance are not sports then do we include ice skating dance? The floor exercises of gymnastics? These competitions are judged by a panel based on various technical merits and technical ability. Synchronized water ballet was included in the Olympics! The real reasons behind this debate is that there is an industry that doesn’t want cheerleading classified as a sport and colleges also are fighting it because if it is classified as a sport then the states and feds will have to give matching monies to it just like they do to the other sports.

Cheerleading is not a sport. It is a narascistic , individual effort(occasionally a group effort),but no the less, a function for girls who are full of themselves to show off with the ‘”look at me,look at me”attention to fulfill their egos. Eye candy “at best”.If it truely were a sport, even a spectator sport, then their would be a cheerleading season or something?Only the south would invent,or call cheerleading a sport. They made driving around in circles really fast a sport, and Nascar is the most BRAINLESS spectator sport out there next to golf, poker and tennis to name a few.

Before they said cheerleading ‘wasnt’ a sport it was ranked the most dangerouse sport. try to hold someone over your head and keep them sturdy while they are pulling insane streatches and ten catcthem whilethey twist down. if it wasnt a sport it wouldnt have been a sport in the first place.

My first practice I got a minor concussion from flying, then when I was put to base my wrist was twisted. And no these injuries wern’t from sloppy work. My bases and my top girl had already done cheer for along time! And anyone who says theres no compaintition in cheer, have you ever been to a cheer compatition? We do have competitions and we are judged on our skills and how hard we hit out routine. we may not be physically hurt by the opposing teams but we are mentally freaked out! and we dont have a ball but we hold someone either the same weight or heavier than ourselves above our heads, thats not an easy task. my team has had countless injuries from concussions to broke and sprained arms, ankles, knees, etc. Cheer is a sport, there is no doubt about it.

For one, a competitive cheerleading routine is 2 minutes and 30 seconds and with the amount of jumping, lifting, running, vigourous movement, dancing, yelling, and gymnastics, the routine is the equivalent of nearly sprinting for those 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Not only does this require excellent endurance and strength, but the stunts and tumbling require balance, tenchnique, muscle, and most importantly, fearlessness. It is clear that competitive cheerleading is a sport. Some people are just not intelligent enough to see all of this and momst people argue that cheerleading is not a sport without even attending a competition or seeing a talented cheerleading squad. I rest my case on this, but I’d also like to add that softball and baseball are not sports. They were actually created as leasurely sports and though they require some coordination players spend more time sitting on a bench then actually engaging in physical activity.

(150) haily says duh it is says:

duh!!!!cheerleading is definetly a sport. the girl who said you need to use a ball well that is j ust dumb and hockey doesnt use a ball anyaways they use a puck we use flyers which are heavier then all balls i have played soccer, hockey etc. and i have to say cheerleading is the hardest you have to be scored and earn oyur points everyone says so then cheerleading is not a sport. LIES! we earn our points stunts we hit, faces we make, tight motions we hit,go tumbling we throw and it adds up to a total my friend said cheerleading is stupid boys don’t need to be cheered for i dont cheer for boys thank you i do competitive which is a sport and so is rec i would like to see all of you who say its not to do my routine and its easy cuz its a level 1 routine but i bet the ones who dont cheerlead won’t be able to do. it is vert offensive to say its not a sport. we work just as hard as a football player and maybe harder.
“athletes lift weights cheerleader lift athletes”
we are athletes who lift each other there are more ingeries in cheerleading then any sport you try my pyramid you try a basket toss you try anything in my routine and anyone of you who says its not a sport or doesn’t cheerlead you would ephically fail we get scored by the points we earn you score goals we get points by holdung people up doing gymnastics and being tight
sport-an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.
we compete and you need skill unless you want to kill your flyer so back off all of you who say its dumb and not a sport we competeit needs skill,we lift people, and a noncheerleader can’t do it
we’re jusr as much of an athlete as a football player
we are athletes
if cheerleading isn’t a sport football or any other “sport” is not a sport eith
we’re just as much of an athlete as a footba,

sogay (ha ha so funny NOT) thinks they can cheerlead but we can’t play soccer etc. umm excuse me i do competition cheerleading
you try throwing a maybe 50-90 pound person in the air way heavier then a stupid soccer ball and actually i play soft ball which is much easier then cheerleading i have plkayed soccer and i still can much easier then cheerleading you try throwing an handspring or full i bet you can’t!!!! gymnastics and dance r both sports whether you think so or not and thats what cheerleading is made of plus you try holding on girl by your mouth with only one other persons help you would drop her and not catch her we have to throw and catch people which is much harder then throwing and catching and kicking a ball
alexsis youcam says a sport needs to be in the olympics
american football annd lacrosse are not so i guess they are not sports
mckenzee says a sport needs a ball
well hockey doesn’t and neither does gymnastics so that isn’t really a smart thing to say we throw and catch people which is much harder to do
general people say it isn’t competitive they just pump uop crowds or stripping is harder
i think u guys are not very “bright” should i say cheerleading takes abillity and skill gymnastics dance jumping and sholding people is including you need strenth and coordination .gosh!!! and MOST teams now a days compete ever heard of all stars cheerleading

(152) Blake says:

while i do acknowlede that it is competetive and dangerous. it is not recognized as a ‘sport’ so much as a competition. if it were a sport, it wud be included in the olympics as all recognized sports. i believe based on the fact that it does not fullfill the literal criteria, and on its exclusion from recognition as a valid sport or inclusion into the olympics that it truly is not a sport. If you cannot find it on espn, espn2, olympics or any sport channel thats because it is not a sport.

(153) david says:

is cheerleading a sport? well no its not cheerleading does not do the things that sports atlethes do. cheerleaders do not have a game that thousands of people watch. cheerleaders do not run in a game like basketball and football players do. there is no item in their game, all they do is cheer for the sport they are cheering for. they shake there but to turn little kids and grown men on.

(154) Kaitlyn says:

Of course cheerleading is a sport!! I do not do cheerleading, but I know it is waaay more physically demanding than other sports, they have a lot of practice required, and a lot of skill. Any guy can play football, if he could run into people, and football’s a sport. Cheerleading is as much a sport as any, requiring balance and flexibility, when with other sports you only need certain skills to do well.

(155) Chris says:

Well it’s a good thing spelling and grammar aren’t sports or this forum would be full of losers.

That said, I do not classify cheerleading as a sport. I also do not classify dance as a sport. I have hard time calling anything that uses subjective metrics a “sport” in general. For me, a “sport” requires a specific physical talent or skill, and at the end of the competition there should be an objective winner. Two people should not be able to watch a sports competition and disagree on who has won.

If it makes you feel better, I do not consider golf or bowling sports either.

(156) caitlyn says:

Highschool cheerleading IS NOT a sport. Anything “cheerleading” to do with cheering football basketball ect , is NOT a sport. Its a spirit group. I hate highschool cheerleaders . Now I’m an all star cheerleader and what I do is a sport. Were competing for one thing and were out there to win. We go nonstop for 2min and 30sec , stunting tumbling jumps , dance , motions. Its so much harder then you think. Ill argue with anyone anyday that what we do is a sport . And half the people that say it isn’t could NEVER DO WHAT WE DO . Now try & walk a day in my nfinitys , pull the body positions I do , oh and throw a roundoff backhandspring , backhandspring whip to a double full.

(157) RacerX95 says:

hell no cheerleading is not a sport. its just a bunch of girls shouting at the top of their lungs trying to get the guys in the stands horny. the only physical part about it is when they go into the locker room after wards and have fun with each other.

(158) ggggg says:

to “Sogay”. You don’t just pick them up and throw them in the air. Do you even do cheerleading? And tosses are not all. You need to tumble too. Anyone can play soccer, all you do is kick a ball. I don’t understand why people choose to do those dumb sports. Try doing something like cheerleading or gymnastics which all of you football losers are jealous of.

(160) Corinn says:

Ok so I have been cheering for about 8 years now and I consider cheerleading a sport. Cheerleading is classified in 2 “groups” if you want to call it that, high school/college and all-star. All-star and college are more demanding than high school cheerleading. Cheerleading does have high injury rates, but same with any other sport. Does football toss a human body 20 feet in the air and be caught by humans?? or flip upside down while spinning?? A sport needs to include competition between your team and an opponent, declares a winner, propelling a mass in the air. Does cheerleading have competition between one or more opponents?? yes… Does cheerleading declare a winner?? yes…. Does cheerleading propel a mass through the air?? yes…. in all honestly cheerleading a sport. Why is is such a big conflict whether it is a sport or not?? It meets all the requirements…

i have been in cheer scince i was in kindergarden. and i love it. it is totally a sport it is one of the most highly ranked injury sports. we can practice up to 14 hours a week at my gym. much more than some football leagues. so next time you think of it it is a true sport.

(162) cheerleading101 says:

ok cheerleading is most definatley sport and if you dont believe that than you are stupid…sorry but its true. whoever says that it isnt is just jelous that they are not as flexable or talented and skilled at cheerleaders are. if football is a sporrt cheerleading is because cheerleaders dont even have any pads on like football players. if you dont think cheerleading is a sport try lifting someone in the air keeping a good platform so the girl does not fall down on top of you and brake something. try doing two to a tuck and a standing full then get back to us. too hard for you? yeah thats what i thought. so dont hate apprieciate! :)

(163) Meeeeeee says:

Sideline cheerleading is definately not a sport, but competitive is. I’ve played soccer, basketball, gymnastics, dance, and cheerleading. Cheerleading is just as hard, if not harder, than all of them. You don’t need a ball for something to be a sport. Hockey, swimming, gymnastics, and track you don’t need a ball and they’re still sports.

In Cheerleading competitions you are judged, just like in gymnastics competitions which is btw an Olympic sport! We don’t just wave pom pons, we stunt, tumble, and compete. Cheering at football games is like practice for us. It prepares us for real competitions.

I bet most of you couldn’t do half the things we do. Come on guys let’s see you do a layout or a full! RacerX95, you’re sick. Really, really sick.

Cheerleading is a fun, competitive SPORT. I’ve endured 4 hour practices to prepare for competitions. It’s difficult. Besides this, our uniforms are cool and our poms are pretty damn sweet:)

(164) Cheer is a sport. says:

Umm you people have no idea what you are talking about. I have been a cheerleader for 5 years and it is the most work you will do in youf life. Its not just something preppy girls do. And we dont just swing are pom poms around, it is the most physical work i have ever done. And i did soccer and basketball longer than cheerleading and i have to say cheerleading is way much harder! You lift a 1 pound ball we lift a person! and i have to say conditioning for cheerleading is way much harder than any sport.
So why dont you people just get over, cuz it is and always will be a sport.! also we do have competions, its called competive cheerleading, where we have judges scoreing us. soo yeah.

(165) soccerstar23 says:

Cheerleading is not a sport. Plain and simple. Its original nature was not competitive. It was ment to get everybody cheering for your team. People have just turned that into a competition, just like they have with stuff like eating and sheep shearing. Cheerleading is phyically demanding and there is a risk of injury. Cheer is a Recreational activity.

They say golf is a sport , but all they do is just swing and bend down . I have been doing cheerleading and I have practiced 3 times a week for years . I have been in tumbling classes , cheer practices , and others . But cheer is definetly a sport . People break bones just like any sport and sweat in just about all sports . If cheerleading were any easier than it would have be called football .

(168) caroine says:

b4 i started cheer i thought it was cheesy and definetly NOT a sport. but after spending sooo much time trying to perfect my back handspring and triple toe touch, ive learned that cheer builds character, muscle, and a high pain tolerance. im a flyer, so im not lifting anyone, but i still have to stretch and do heelstreches and scorpions. id like to see all u haters do that. overall, dont say somethings a sport or not until you’ve actually tried it. after my 8 years of xperiance, i think that allstar cheer is just as much a spot as hs cheer or football. all though you may not have a ball, that doesnt mean its not hard. btw in allstar cheer its a cheer TEAM not a squad.if u dont think that cheer is a sport take a look at california bullets lvl 5 win nationals. bet u cant do a standing full.

(169) tasha says:

cheerleading IS a sport! sure, we don’t have physical contact like with other sports, but i dont see golf having any physical contact, or gymnastics? and gymnastics is a sport. We condition. We compete for the highest score against other squads. We practice 8-9 months for a 2.30minute routine. We lift 150lb people. how is it not a sport?!

(170) ACETribe! says:

Ok wow this is a really heated discution. WARNING: I’m by no means a prep in any form of the word but I am a cheerleader and I’m proud to be one. I’ve cheered all my life and when I was little did gymnastics and dance so I have pretty much gotten a pretty good taste of all of these. Well just to get this said cheer leading is a sport. Yep its not that big of a deal and all these excuses that are coming up agenst that fact are quite crappy if I must say, no offence. If faulty judging in competition cheer is your argument well ha you better throw that idea out the door because most Olympic games are based on judges. For example, gymnastics, diving, skiing/snowboarding, majority of wrestling, wheight lifting and many more. And I dont mean to offend but faulty judging can happen ANYWHERE in ANY SPORT that requires judges. makeing all of those other sports, acording to you, “not sports”.
Now if your argueing about there not being any contac or a ball yes there are neigther of those things in cheer. But those are also not in swiming(in any sence of the word take watter polo), gymnastics, snowboarding/skiing, skating(in any sence of the word), track and field events, cycleing, rowing, and many many more. :)
Last but not least yeah cheer did not start out as a sport it was, by its name, for cheering on the team that was playing and getting the crowd fired up. But now it has evolved in to a spot by adding competition makeing a need for harder skills, more endurence, and more determination.

This is why cheer is a sport. :) Thank you!

(171) Barry says:

If cheerleading is a sport…why don’t they have cheerleaders cheering for them? Stop cheerleading and use your athletic skills to actually play a sport and feel what it is like to compete on a daily basis.
