Gimme a B for Bring It On

Universal Studio's recent release of Bring It On has finally elevated the status of how Hollywood movies portray Cheerleaders. There is no way you can leave the theater without being convinced that Cheerleading is a sport. It clearly depicts the hard work, dedication, determination, and team effort that goes into a successful squad.

The movie pits two rival Cheerleading squads against one another for a National Championship. The Toros, from Rancho Carne High in San Diego, are captained by Torrance Shipman (Kirsten Dunst). The opposing squad, the Clovers from East Compton, is headed by Isis (Gabrielle Union). When Torrance discovers their routines were stolen from the Clovers, she is shouldered with the task of finding a new routine in time to defend their sixth National title. Understandably, Isis is ripping mad at the news of the stolen routines, since the Clovers will also be competing at Nationals this year. And so the fun begins.

The movie perfectly displays school spirit and high school banter and without a doubt, the best parts of the film are the moves; they are almost as good as watching an ESPN Cheerleading Championship. The movie is rated PG-13 for its sexual innuendoes and foul language.

Pro's and Con's of Bring It On
Pros Cons Exciting stunts and routines Foul language Athleticism of Cheerleading Illegal stunts for High School level Funny and entertaining Lack of visible coaching staff Great music Cheating in competition

Bring It On has a bit of something for everyone, including comedy, sex, and a touch of romance. It lightly touches on homosexuality and race relations without delving too deeply. Even if the movie didn't portray the world of Cheerleading 100% accurately, this is Hollywood afterall, it moved away from the dumb, ditty blonde stereotype, so, I say...
