Putting the "Fun" in Fundraising

All Cheerleading squads can use some extra $$, but are your fundraisers boring?

By Valerie Ninemire, About.com

Tired of those boring car washes as a way to raise money for your Cheerleading squad? Try some new and innovative ways to bring in that cash you never seem to have enough of.

Here are some ideas:

  • Put together a cookbook. Gather recipes from students, parents, and teachers. Display and sell the cookbooks at games.
  • Hold a clinic for elementary students. Charge a set amount per child. Teach them some cheers and let them perform at one of your games. (Submitted by: Kaitlin)
  • Hold a 50/50 raffle. Sell tickets. The prize is 50% of the money you collect, your squad keeps the rest. (Submitted by: Denise)
  • Have a carnival. See if you can set it up in the school gym. Have booths with different games and activities.
  • Have a competition between your squad and either the football or basketball players. Sell tickets.
  • Hold a rummage sale. Make signs and advertise all over town.
  • Ask a local business if the squad can work a day for a portion of the profits or donations. Gas stations, drive-thrus, and fast food places are good for this.
  • Sell cheek tattoos of your school mascot or symbol. Do this at all the games.
  • Sell school spirit yard signs.
  • Approach a local florist about selling flowers for holidays like Valentine's Day. Or have a school sweetheart day, take orders, collect the money and deliver them on a certain day.
  • Make a Web site for your squad, then for a donation, put ads on it for local businesses.

Some tips to remember whenever you're asking for donations or money:

  1. Always mention what the money/donation will be used for and who is collecting it.
  2. Be polite and don't forget to say "thank you".
  3. If possible wear your uniform.
  4. Keep good records.
  5. Don't make promises you can't keep.

Although fundraising may not be the most pleasant aspect of Cheerleading, it doesn't have to be a chore. Get creative and enjoy your next fundraising project. Share your fundraising ideas here.
