Before You Attending Cheerleading Camps or Clinics

By , About.com Guide

Here you'll find helpful advice on how to prepare for camp, what to bring to camp and ways to make your time at camp not only fun, but a great learning experience. From the different kinds of cheerleading camps to what to pack for cheer camp, this article will become your checklist on cheerleading camps and clinics.

Choosing Your Cheerleading Camp or Clinic

There are many types of cheerleading camps. There are resident camps, commuter camps, day camps, speciality camps and camps for the type of squad, like all-stars, scholastic and rec. So, do your research and find a camp that fits your squad's needs. Usually your coach will select the camp, but occasionally companies offer camps and clinics for individuals. Besides the curriculum, factors like travel, cost and dates will all affect the camp you attend.

Get in Shape Before You Go to a Cheerleading Camp or Clinic

Don't think that camp is where you go to get in shape. You want to be in top physical condition before you get there. Exercise regularly, eat healthy, stretch constantly and prepare your voice for its rigorous use at camp. By getting yourself in peak condition before camp, you'll lessen the chance of an injury that could put you out of commission before your season even starts.

Packing for Cheerleading Camps

Packing for cheer camp is pretty straight forward. Your coach should have a list of things you'll need to bring. Remember to put comfort at the top of your priorities. Try everything on before you go. Make sure it fits properly. You don't want to practice cheerleading in anything that is too tight or too baggy. You're going to be on your feet constantly, so consider your footwear carefully. Leave any valuables at home, camp is hectic and it's no place for fancy jewelry or accessories.

Squad Bonding - Getting to Know Your Teammates at Cheerleading Camps

While at camp, you will be with your squad day and night. Prepare yourself mentally for this type of closeness. Keep in mind that disagreements can occur, but camp is not the place to fight and bicker. Leave your bad attitude or any preconceived feelings about other squad members at home. Start fresh and give everyone a chance to prove themselves. The same goes for you, it's your opportunity to show your fellow cheerleaders who you really are and what you're made of. Also, keep in mind that jokes are funny, but when they are at the expense of another person's feelings they can become ugly. Think situations through.

Record Your Cheerleading Memories - "Kodak Moments"

You'll return from camp with some of the best friends you can ever imagine. Camp is truly the time when a squad comes together and everything gels. Be prepared to record the fun, the work and the great people you've had a chance to meet at camp. Consider your cheerleading scrapbook, take lots of photos and save any memorabilia to remind you of your time at camp. Cheer camp will definitely be filled with "Kodak Moments" you'll look back on fondly.
