26 TX Cheerleaders Squeeze into Elevator & Get Stuck

Friday August 8, 2008
What is it about cheerleading and the state of Texas? It seems like they are always in the news and most of the time it isn't because they've done something good. The latest antic to hit the mainstream media is of a Texas squad attending cheer camp at the University of Texas. The squad, made up of 14 to 17 year olds, decided to ignore signs that said, "15 People - 3000 lb Limit" and proceeded to cram 26 people in the elevator. Luckily, the elevator made it safely from the fourth floor down to the first, but then the door refused to open. At this point, cell phones were used to call for help. Police and firefighters arrived and after a repairman worked on the door for about 25 minutes the girls were freed. One girl fainted, was taken to the hospital and then released. Two others were treated at the scene.

So, I have to ask, as I'm sure others are asking, "Are these the kind of stunts that cheerleaders want to be known for and what does this kind of publicity do for the stereotyping of cheerleaders?" Leave your comments and thoughts below.

First I would like to address the first part of this article when you slam Texas cheerleaders. Texas cheerleaders are not the only cheerleaders that are in the news for bad things, there are many other states with cheerleading blow ups. (for example Florida cheerleaders beating up a girl) Cheerleading and football are huge in Texas and many people take it seriously. 90% of Texas cheerleaders are great role modles and supporters for their community, state, and country. Almost everyday there is a story about cheerleaders doing something good in Texas but people like you and others out there don’t pay attention to good and only thrive on bad. Try to stop going negative on Texas cheerleaders and look on the new every now and then and look at all the positive Texas cheerleaders do!

Well this stunt wasn’t too smart of these girls. But it could have very well happened to any other sport team that is not a cheerleading team. It just so happens that this was a group of cheerleaders, which encourages the “dumb cheerleader” stereotype.
