UConn has decided to do away with their tumbling and stunting cheerleaders and replace them with a "spirit squad" that will pass out spirit buttons and interact with fans. The decision was explained by the assistant vice president for student affairs and director of student activities, Christine Wilson, this way, "we want people formerly called cheerleaders to focus in on building spirit at UConn, on spending time working on ways to engage fans and to really spread Husky spirit."

Well I’m from Connecticut and Cheered for Hall High, I can say that there are going to be MANY disappointed girls. I would also expect alot of the girls who want to attend a college with an actual cheer squad to go else where. Its 2009 not 1950, Uconn is making a HUGE mistake!
I think that its a mistake to take out the cheerleading squad. Im a cheerleader and it would really suck if my college got rid of the cheer squad. I just feel sorry for the future girls who wanted to be on the squad and for the girls who worked their butt off to make the squad. Alot of fans will also be disappointed, especially the ones who come to games and events to see the cheerleading squad.
This is just another administration making decisions not for the good of the students, but for their own perspective. I suspect that many of the cheerleaders will transfer to another school. The administration needto stop making decisions that does not have a positive impact on the students. Move into 2009 already! CHEERS!
